Disorders of Consciousness Laboratory (DoC-Lab)

Led by Jan Claassen, MD, the Disorders of Consciousness Laboratory (DoC-Lab) focuses on translational research investigating patients with acute disorders of consciousness. The highly multidisciplinary research group integrates behavioral, electrophysiological and advanced imaging technology to gain insights into underlying mechanisms of unconscious patients with and without acute brain injury. Of particular interest are patients with covert consciousness, patients that appear unresponsive but have hidden consciousness detectable only by advanced EEG or neuroimaging. The goal of the laboratory is to develop more accurate predictors and support long term recovery of these patients. Active areas of research include prediction modeling, development of novel monitoring and therapeutic technology, brain computer interface development to open novel communication channels, implementation of pharmacological and physical therapy support, and contextualizing this work within ethical frameworks.

Mission. To develop accurate predictions of outcomes and support the recovery of unconscious critically ill patients.
