Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Program
The Department of Neurology in the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center/ (NYP/CUIMC) has a long and dynamic legacy of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and health care setting, while striving to understand, address, and eliminate health care disparities both locally and globally. We maintain a broad and growing number of programs, policies, and practices that support the recruitment and retention of a diverse and inclusive workforce of faculty, fellows, residents, staff members, and other members of our academic community. At the same time, through research, clinical, and administrative initiatives, we strive to advance health equity both here within our local, culturally diverse, Washington Heights-Hamilton Heights-Inwood community of Northern Manhattan, as well as through programs initiated abroad.
To further these efforts in a more organized and cohesive fashion, the Department of Neurology created the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Program, led by Chief Diversity Officer Dr. Carolyn B. Britton, with assistance and input from a DEIA Committee. The Committee, consisting of faculty and administrative staff from within the Department of Neurology, has a diverse representation and will continue to provide culturally competent education regarding health care disparities, implicit bias, LGBTIQA+ population, cultural competency, gender equality, race, disabilities, and workplace inclusion. The Committee will further educate and train leadership, house staff, and personnel in culturally appropriate policies and practices on an ongoing basis, and will evaluate these efforts annually.
