Welcome to the Fellowship Training Program in the Neuropsychology of Epilepsy.
The Division of Epilepsy and Sleep Disorders at Columbia University Irving Medical Center is located at the Neurological Institute at 710 West 168th Street in New York, NY. We are a major referral center, with patients from southeastern New York, southwestern Connecticut, and northern New Jersey. We additionally maintain an 8 bed adult Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (Milstein Pavilion) and a 10 bed pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital) with installed video EEG equipment, and registered EEG technologists with 24 hour coverage, specially trained nursing staff, and 1:1 monitoring for intracraniallyimplanted patients.
During the 2-year postdoctoral fellowship, fellow will gain expertise in the neuropsychology of epilepsy, including neuropsychological evaluation and specialized invasive procedures such as Wada testing and intra and extra-operative direct stimulation mapping. The population includes primarily patients with epilepsy, but also those with movement disorders, brain tumors, vascular anomalies, dementia, and other neurological disorders, with an age range from very young children through older adults. Fellow will attend and present at epilepsy case conferences, with opportunity to attend neurology and neuropsychology lectures, and neurology, neuroradiology, and neurosurgery rounds. Fellow will also participate in NIH funded research in language and epilepsy and epilepsy surgery. There as an academic requirement of at least one abstract submitted to national professional conference; topic to be decided by fellow and supervisors. We work closely with, and are invested in the success of each fellow, whether that future is in clinical or academic leadership roles in the field of neuropsychology.
Our Program
The Neuropsychology of Epilepsy Fellowship at Columbia is a two-year training program. Fellow will conduct three neuropsychological evaluations per week and assist with supervision of predoctoral clinical externs. Fellow will participate in Wada and mapping procedures as scheduled. Fellow will participate in an organized collection of lectures, teaching conferences, and journal clubs. Upon completion, fellows will be proficient in conducting neuropsychological procedures specific to epilepsy and other neurosurgical patients (e.g., CNS tumor, Parkinson’s Disease), and in interpreting neuropsychological results in patients with a range of complex, epilepsy syndromes. Development of independent research projects is strongly encouraged, and fellow will benefit from broad exposure to database management and biostatistics. Two weeks of vacation time are allotted per year. Stipend is competitive and includes full benefits.
Requirements and Eligibility
Applicant must have had both coursework and clinical training in neuropsychology and must be eligible for and possess a New York State Limited Permit. Preference is given to applicants who have completed internship with extensive neuropsychology experience. Interviews will be mandatory.
