Research

Dr. Agarwal research interests lie in characterizing the cognitive, psychological, and health behavioral dimensions of cardiac arrest survivorship for both survivors and their families, and its association with cardiovascular disease risk, functional outcomes, and quality of life. He received his first independent research funding in 2021. In this multi-site study (NYPH Columbia, Allan Hospital, and now Weill-Cornell hospital) in collaboration with the Center for Behavioral Cardiovascular Health in Cardiology, he is leveraging wearable technology and digital health to assess patients’ positive and negative affect, estimate autonomic dysfunction, and objectively assess sleep and physical activity as mediators of the relationship between cardiac anxiety and cardiovascular events within 1-year after CA.

Dr. Agarwal in conjunction with The Columbia Roybal Center for Fearless Behavior Change, is involved in designing behavioral interventions for heart-specific anxiety and posttraumatic stress by leveraging some of the physiological and biological targets.

His recent initiative, NeuroCardiac Comprehensive Care for Co-survivors & Family members (N4C-F) is partnering with family members of cardiac arrest patients, both locally at NYPH and nationally, to develop resources and care pathways to help promote knowledge, self-care, and ways to alleviate caregiver burden and prolonged grief among the co-survivors and bereaved family member, respectively. Dr. Agarwal’s work is the foundation of a new equitable science of cardiac arrest survivorship, with empirically derived targets for preserving or restoring function, cognition, and quality of  life.

He is a widely recognized expert on cardiac arrest survivorship and outcomes. He has published more than 125 journal articles, book chapters, and reviews. His research is supported by federal R01.
