Research
Dr. Marshall directs the Richard & Jenny Levine Cerebral Localization Laboratory and conducts an active clinical research program on cerebral hemodynamics and brain function including the investigation of brain reorganization after stroke using functional MRI and the impact of cerebral blood flow on cognition. He has been continuously funded by NIH grants for his research since his appointment at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1994. Current NIH grants include regional and national leadership on the StrokeNet platform for stroke clinical trials, an RO1 multicenter clinical trial to investigate the impact of carotid revascularization on cognition in patients with carotid artery stenosis, and an R01 behavioral intervention assessing the impact of a multidisciplinary behavioral health intervention to improve stroke outcomes in minority, underserved stroke patients. He also participates in several clinical trials for acute stroke therapy, stroke prevention and stroke recovery.
