Overview
Kimberly Kwei is a board-certified neurologist and has sub-specialty training in the field of movement disorders. She finished a fellowship in movement disorders at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, during which time she was the Edmond J. Safra Fellow in Movement Disorders. Before that, she completed a residency in neurology at the Mount Sinai Hospital, where she also earned her MD and PhD in neuroscience degrees as a graduate of their NIH-funded medical scientist training program. She pursued undergraduate studies at Amherst College, where she majored in chemistry and neuroscience.

Research
I have found myself drawn to better understanding atypical parkinsonisms such as multiple system atrophy (MSA) as well as symptoms of Parkinson’s disease that have proven refractory to treatment, such as freezing of gait. One of my current projects involves characterizing the biomechanics of freezing of gait, in collaboration with the department of engineering, in the hopes of developing a mobile gait-monitoring device such that freezing can both be more accurately characterized out of the office and hopefully can provide moment to moment feedback to the patient to improve gait. Toward the end of better understanding atypical parkinsonisms, I am involved in clinical trials recruiting MSA patients into a natural history study. I am also involved in a study assessing the long-term outcomes of patients who have had neurosurgical intervention for movement disorders.
