National Institute on Aging Alzheimer’s Disease Family Based Study
The National Institute on Aging–Alzheimer’s Disease Family Based Study (NIA–AD FBS) is a nationwide research effort focused on identifying genes that play a role in Alzheimer’s disease and learning more about its causes, treatment, and prevention. The study brings together families across the United States and supports genetic research by sharing de-identified clinical, genetic, and biological data with qualified researchers.
Under the leadership of Dr. Richard Mayeux, Chair of the Department of Neurology, the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center has played a central role in this long-standing national collaboration. Dr. Mayeux serves as senior principal investigator of the study and brings decades of expertise in Alzheimer’s disease, genetic epidemiology, and the study of diverse families in which multiple members have been affected by the disease.
The Alzheimer’s Disease Family Based Study now has a central website that serves as the primary source of information for participants, families, researchers, and participating study sites.
