Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship for Neurology or Infectious Disease Residency Graduates

The Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship for neurology or infectious disease residency graduates (in person; annual availability funding dependent) at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center is a 1-2 year joint clinical and research fellowship to train sub-specialists in the field of neuroinfectious disease. The fellowship is run by Kiran Thakur, MD, and Kathryn Holroyd, MD.

Fellowship program and opportunities:

  •  Attend multiple outpatient clinics, including neuro-HIV clinic, a neurology-focused parasitology clinic, general neuroinfectious diseases, and a neuro-COVID clinic, based on the fellow's particular areas of interest.
  • Rotate for 4-8 weeks on inpatient ID consult and transplant ID consult services
  • Lead the longitudinal neuroinfectious diseases inpatient consult service (approximately 1-5 consults per week).
  • The fellow will be mentored on a longitudinal clinical research project on a topic of their choosing, and also have the opportunity to collaborate on existing retrospective and prospective projects in the neuro-ID research group led by Dr. Kiran Thakur.
  • The fellow will have access to existing clinical databases, including those involving the neurologic complications of HIV, VZV, neurocysticercosis, and inflammatory and infectious encephalitis.
  • The fellow will also be encouraged to apply for and mentored in the development of grants to support future research.
  • The fellow will also assist in the organization of quarterly neuro-ID educational lecture series, weekly case conferences, and the neurology resident neuro-ID curriculum.

Requirements and Eligibility

  • Requirement includes completion of an accredited Neurology of Infectious Diseases residency program.
  • Prior experience in clinical research and/or neuroinfectious diseases is preferred

Once application submission is approved, the required materials include:

  • Personal Statement describing scientific and medical background, including any background/training in neurological diseases and research, how the fellowship will fit into future research goals, and particular areas/diseases of interest in neuroinfectious diseases
  • CV
  • Three letters of reference, preferably from senior faculty with whom the candidate has worked clinically and/or scientifically, a statement describing the current position/faculty appointment, description of the facility working in/training in terms of research and clinical capacity
  • A phone/video interview will be conducted with select applicants
