Rethinking How Biomedical Researchers Use Race and Ethnicity
Danurys L. Sanchez, senior staff associate and manager of several community-centered initiatives at Columbia, participated in the report on using race and ethnicity in biomedical research recently released by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Health and Medicine Division. Sanchez participated in the committee’s panel and reviewed a draft of the report. “This report not only rethinks the scientific approach to race and ethnicity but also emphasizes the critical need to ethically and transparently engage with the communities involved,” commented Sanchez, a recent MS in Bioethics graduate from Columbia University with an interest in the ethics of identity and its intersection with biomedical research."
