The Department of Neurology in the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons is pleased to announce Andrew B. Lassman, MD as the 2022 Clinician of the Year. Dr. Lassman is a professor of neurology, chief of the Division of Neuro-Oncology, and associate dean of clinical trials at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center (NYP/CUIMC). Dr. Lassman also serves as associate director for clinical trials at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Lassman was nominated for this honor by a committee of his peers, in recognition of his many accomplishments, including the transformative leadership he has brought to the Division of Neuro-Oncology. The driving principle behind this success is Lassman’s compassionate approach to all aspects of patient care, beginning with a commitment by Lassman and team to see patients newly diagnosed with brain tumors quickly, often the same day, regardless of insurance.

Lassman is also renowned for his innovative work in translational clinical trials for brain tumors, in which he utilizes molecular correlative analyses to understand treatment success or failure, and to refine treatment paradigms. His many contributions to the field of Neuro-Oncology have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Preuss Award in Neuro-Oncology from the American Academy of Neurology, in which he is also recognized as a Fellow (FAAN), the Boyer Clinical Research Award from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the Adult Clinical Research Abstract Award from the Society for Neuro-Oncology, and the Nobility in Science Award from the Oligo Nation.

On a personal level, Lassman is warmly regarded and admired by patients, staff, trainees, and colleagues alike. As a fellow faculty member explains, “Andy is a joy to encounter, be it in the elevator, at bedside, in brain tumor conferences, in the outpatient offices, or on the street. He is invariably joyful, kind, enthusiastic, inquiring, empathic, tolerant, and supportive. He gives the highest level of care and service to all.”

The Department of Neurology faculty and staff could not agree more! Congratulations to Dr. Lassman on this well-deserved honor!
